On a lava bluff overlooking the deep Tranquille Canyon, two old and very large ponderosa pines cling to a grand view. The lava beneath them formed when a shield volcano poured over the edge of older rock.
It's amazing to me how trees can withstand the intense heat of the summer on this southwest facing cliff and the winter storms that rip across the canyon. It is a quiet place where ravens, eagles, meadowlarks, various sparrows and many four-leggeds can be observed.
