Plein Air Paintings
Beauty is the repose of perfect action in sound or colour or form, and well has it been said that of all things in the material world art alone endures.

"Little Shuswap Lake " - 12 x 9 Oil Lake Painting
"Little Shuswap Lake" 12x9 Oil on board Plein Air Painting
A clouded sunrise viewed from Chase Beach. The air was still when I arrived and then a steady breeze came off the lake as so often does when the day begins to warm up. I had to rug up even though it's early June.
I enjoy a simple composition of what is there, even though the land, the air, and the water are so terrifically powerful in both quiet, an energetic ways.

"Isobel Lake" 12x9 Oil on board Plein Air Painting
A hike around Isobel Lake and I found the opening to this view on a dull morning. A knocking sound beside me drew my attention to a duck nesting box fixed to a tree, a mother in their sitting on her eggs! Some time later she flew out.
This painting was sold on the trail before returning to my campsite!

"Birches" - Oil 9x12 Tree Painting
"Birches" 12x9 Oil on board Plein Air Painting
I find light on leaves enchanting. This small family of birches is young, however they live on a beach where the winds have roughened and weathered their trunks, but their leaves are new and vibrant in June.

Fingers and toes were numb while waiting for the sun to break over a mountain and light up this farmers field. On Campbell Creek road I expected the creek to be the focus of a painting but nature was going to show me something else. After dashing up and down the road to get
warm so I could properly hold a brush, sunlight spilled across the field and lit up this family of alders. Heavy with pre-bud emanations, they seemed to be vibrating in warmth and eager for more sunny days. The plein air sketch was used to produce this melodic little painting.

"Sandbar" - 11x14 Acrylic Landscape Painting
"SANDBAR"
11" x 14" x .5". Acrylic on canvas board.
Early spring water levels in the North Thompson River exposed this sandbar. It was below zero as I waited for the sun to rise over Strawberry Hill. Canada geese, sparrows and song birds announced the new day and spring’s arrival. ‘Cups’ appeared in the sand,
the remnants of footprints crested with frost. The sun hit the far shore and creeped across
the breadth of the river painting blue stripes across the sand bar making the whole seen come to life. From a plein air study.

"Martin Creek" - 11x14 Acrylic River Painting
Sold out
"Martin Creek"
11" x 14" x .75" Acrylic on canvas
Creeks are like little symphonies playing soprano and alto to baritone, from forte to soft. Water flows, smacks and tumbles over, under and around rocks, wood, earth and like adding voice, oxygen is mixed in.
I find joy in creeks, I can get in them without worry of being swept away. I find their nature revealed at each descending plateau is a new scene, some messy or chaotic from past floods, others romantic and calm with overhanging greenery where sunlight catches like diamonds.
Martin Creek flows through a deep gravel cut and then onto a flat small wooded plain where I found a spot to set up my easel and make a study for this little painting. The challenge was not the predictable changing light due to the passage of time, but because of the woods, the area was plunged into deep shade, then bright overcast and back to dappled sun all within a minute.

"Last of the Snow - Cabin" -12x16 Acrylic Landscape Painting
"LAST OF THE SNOW"
12" x 16" x .75" Acrylic on canvas
I spent three delightful days and nights at this cabin up north. Such fun and happy memories made there with family.
On the last morning I woke early to get outside and make a plein air painting of this scene. When I was nearly finished my grandsons came running out the door to yell, "Good morning Granny!" to see what I was doing.
In that painting the perspective was off, so to paint the cabin again in the studio, and make it right with the foreknowledge of the first attempt took me back to those cherished days.
The birch and fir forest surrounding it flooded the air with spring scents as the last of the snow lay melting by the door. Seasonal transitions are rich with life and quiet.

"Old Days" - 11x14 Acrylic Log building Painting
"Old Days"
11" x 14" x .75" Acrylic on canvas
There are remains of many homesteads and out buildings from the early days of settlement in BC's interior. Present day ranchers just let them and the fences fall away to their own decay. A marmot has made this one his home and while I painted it, he chirped out a warning to others that "she's still here".

"Osprey Tree" - 9x12 Oil Landscape Painting
"OSPREY TREE" (SKIMIKIN LAKE)
9" x 12" x .25" Oil on board
There was activity in this nest. I felt for these birds having to sit for hours to keep eggs cool in high the 30 and low 40 degree temps. The wild ones are so tough compared to us.

"Catkins" - 12 x 9 Oil Tree and Mountain Painting
"Catkins" 12x9 Oil on board Plein Air Painting
A very brisk -3 April morning in Arrowstone Park. Birds going about their nesting and mate calling and the creek behind these aspens tuned my senses to the atmosphere. Sunlight catching on the catkins of the aspens made a garland of light against the blue of the distant mountain and that inspired this painting.

"Lost Key Pine" - 12x9 Oil Tree Painting
"Lost Key Pine" - 12x9 Oil on board, Plein Air.
On the first day trip in the Turtle (camper) I went to Cooney Bay and then up to the Dewdrop Plateau. This pine spoke to me, so I set up my kit on the side of the dirt road and squeezed out a few colours. Not long after, an ATV came by and to my surprise it was a friend I hadn't seen in years. We spoke for a bit and he said he both lost and found his keys under that pine - what are the chances?
It would be interesting if trees could tell us of all the goings on they witness....
